The quote featured in this piece is from an essay written in 1691 by a Scottish minister and St Andrews alumnus named Robert Kirk about ‘the subterranean (and for the most part) invisible people’ of fairyland. This illustration takes two St Andrews locations said to have been frequented by fairies — the Blue Stane on St Marys Pl and the Fairy Knoll near Martyr’s Monument — and imagines them enchanted. The title of the piece refers not only to the identity of these locations as meeting places for the fairy folk, but to the power of story and belief combined with place to provide a medium for connection between people across time.
